Radar Detectors

Radar Detectors
Being free, the relaxation and comfort you get when you know you don't have any speeding ticket with your name on it, and an officer to hand it to you, somewhere along the stretch of road you're speedily driving through. This is the kind of peace of mind you get when you invest on a car radar detector. Today's radar detectors sport sleek, trendy and compact designs, fitted with the latest in detection technology.keeping you safe from hazards and the impending red and blue lights wailing behind your car.

Radar Detectors, How Do They Work?
Imagine a signal from radar as a beam of light, similar to a beam of light from a flashlight. When the flashlight is aimed at an object, the reflected light from the surface of the object you're aiming at is reflected into your eyes; this is how we see. Now, imagine that you're the object being shone upon by the flashlights beam. Almost certainly, you are aware of the light coming from the flashlight at a further range, compared to the person holding the light; he probably couldn't see you that far like you can see him. This is due to restrictions brought upon by physical laws; light loses energy, the greater the distance it travels. In this example, while the light has enough energy to reach you, it doesn't however, have enough energy to reflect back to the source of the beam.it doesn't have energy to do double the distance.

Radar guns work in the same way as this example with a flashlight. The guns are able to see vehicles by emitting pulses of microwave energy. In getting your speed, they make use of the Doppler Effect, a physics equation, calculating various factors to determine an object's velocity. With Doppler Effect, the signal frequency of the original transmitted pulse is compared, or calculated with the reflected signal, resulting in an accurate measurement of how fast a car is moving.

This system on how car radar detectors work, revolve around this process. Instead of calculating for speed, the car detectors sniff out the microwave signals coming from radar guns and warn the driver of its presence, giving him time to slow down, before law enforcement can get an accurate speed reading. Superheterodyne reception is an enhanced type of the basic radar detection principle and is used by many modern detector manufacturer, this technology allows for the detectors to track down radar signals around curves and over hills, and extends at a much further range when used in a straight line.

Things to Sniff Out When Purchasing a Radar Detector:

Detector Type
There are three types of detectors available, the corded, remote mounted, and the cordless. The corded detectors are usually placed on the windshield using suction cups; these models give the highest range of detection. Cordless have their advantages as well, they can easily be transported from one vehicle to another, and produces a cleaner installation, no wires, no fuss. The remote-mount models are usually installed by the manufacturer or professionals, it provides a very neat look in your vehicle, and minimizes the attraction for theft.

City Modes
City modes are pre-selected settings which can be achieved in a single button press; it alters the sensitivity level of the detector, lessening the false alarms in urbanized areas.

Laser Detection
A car radar detector installed with a single laser sensor is capable of defending against laser signals coming from the front, but are unable to sniff out signals coming from the rear, or the flanks of the car. Detectors featured with 360-degrees of protection are always a better choice, but may exhibit a higher purchase price.

Total VG-2 and Spectre Immunity
The VG-2 and Spectre are also referred to as "shielding"; this informs the driver if your vehicle is being targeted by RDDs, or radar "detector detectors". A few car detectors can go on "stealth" mode, whenever they detect RDDs, they automatically shut themselves off. More expensive car radar detectors are capable of full shielding, making them totally undetectable to any time of RDD, which allows them to continuously operate under any barrage of conditions.

Digital Audio Prompts and Alerts
It is better if a car radar detector is capable of issuing voice alerts, as this allows the driver to still keep his eyes on the road, where they belong, while still receiving the details of an alert.

"Instant-On" Defense
In spite of the claims of some detector manufacturers, there is no current technology that guarantees 100% defense against "instant-on" radar. If this type of radar gun is already aimed at your vehicle, it is more likely that the officers already have your speed, before your detector honks an alert. However, if a detector is a very sensitive K-band reception, it is then able of giving you warnings before you are caught speeding. A high level of K-band sensitivity is what car radar detector manufacturers refer to as "Instant-On Protection".
