Here are some of the reviewed radar detectors, garnering the highest rating, according to product performance and user feedback.
Best Overall Radar Detector
Escort Passport 8500 X50 ($300 USD)
Three models go side-by-side as the top radar detectors. Aside from the Escort Passport 8500 X50, the Valentine One and the Bel Pro RX65 are also recipients of the highest scores in product reviews. The Bel Pro however, can only be availed at high-end auto electronics stores, and the Valentine One costs an additional $100. The Escort radar detector tracks down X, K and Ka-band radar guns from two miles away at the very least, and is especially efficient at sniffing Ka-band guns in dangerous POP mode. Even though the Valentine One is much better at detecting laser type guns, reviews indicate that this aspect is of useless value, since by the time the alarm trips; it's often already too late to avoid getting a ticket.

Best Laser Detection
Valentine One ($400 USD)
The Valentine One took the brunt of criticisms in earlier reviews for its inability to effectively detect radar guns in POP mode, which operates in hard-to-detect bursts. However, the current Valentine has now added this feature, and although it gives a high rate of false alarms, many reviews state that it works quite well. The Valentine One is also very good at detecting the beams emitted from laser speed guns, but once a laser has locked onto your car, it's virtually too late to avoid being issued a ticket. Valentine One is a good all-around radar detector; some reviews may say its features and design are a bit outdated, and that it is somewhat expensive, especially when the Escort Passport 8500 X50 performs just as effective.
Best Value
Bel Vector 955 ($200 USD)
The Bel Vector 955 is a surprise hit within its price class. Even though it is missing some features like a carrying case and the ability to be integrated with Bel's laser jamming units, reviews indicate that detection rates for X-, K-, and Ka-band, in all the three frequencies as well as in POP mode, ranks just slightly lower to the more expensive Valentine One and Escort Passport 8500 X50. In quite a number of reviews of radar-detectors, it easily thwarts similarly priced competition manufactured by Cobra and Whistler.
Best Budget Radar Detector
Bel Express 925 ($90 USD)
The Bel Express 925, according to reviews, only lacks in features. Its performance in sniffing out radar threats is almost on par with more expensive detectors. However, it is not fitted with many buttons, lights and customizable features as the others, but for the basic radar detection, it is excellent; and includes Ka-band guns in POP mode. Other reviews state that the Bel Express is within a class of its own.
Best at Evading Detection
Whistler 1788 ($130 USD)
Although the Whistler doesn't surpass Escort, Bel, or Valentine in any other aspect with regard to performance, it is the best at avoiding detection by law enforcement "radar detector detectors," such as the VG-2 and Spectre III, which are often used in the states and within most of Canada where radar detectors are considered illegal.
Best Laser Jammer
Blinder M-20 X-treme
Radar detectors offer virtually no protection against laser guns. Only a laser jammer, such as the Blinder M-20 has the features to deliver countermeasures against laser guns. Although it is illegal to even attempt to jam radar guns, it is legal, in most of the states to use a laser jammer in your car, this system emits an infrared beam at the precise frequency in order to confuse laser guns long enough to give you time to slow down. Laser speed guns are more prevalently being used in urban areas, because it is easy to pinpoint a particular vehicle on a crowded road. In Nebraska, California, Oklahoma, Minnesota, Virginia, Washington D.C. and Utah, laser jammers are considered illegal.
